My 601 project will centre around the subject of art benefitting mental health, though I am unsure of the specific angle or question I would like to ask at this early stage in the work so I'm keeping things rather open as I find things out.
The beginnings of a project are starting to emerge through regular practical pieces that I create each evening in an abstract expressionist vein, both testable and fully realised outcomes. I'm finding that my mental health is improving the more I create art and there is something that I would like to unpick and explore there. What is the science behind what is happening? What is going on in the brain? What other media could I use to communicate my thoughts and feelings of anxiety?
So far, I have researched the definitions of relevant terms that could benefit my written work as well as identifying some of the books, podcasts and journals that could aid my dissertation. I have created a strong portfolio of practical work and poetry to create an authorial practice and approach. I attended a webinar by consume comms, in Leeds, called "What If We Just Made Art For Us?" which was very inspiring.
My action plan is to access the relevant texts and to start finding out what it is I would like to start finding out in relation to art and mental health as it's such a wide topic and, admittedly, rather overwhelming to think about. From there, I can develop a more realised essay structure and skeleton to build on. I need to plan my time using to-do lists.
My own mental health is declining a little bit as I'm without my Guide Dog for longer than was originally planned while she has surgery to remove benign tumours and recover. It makes going to campus difficult as well as my personal life. I will try to push on despite this.
